COMMUNITY LIVING SERVICES
The Arc of San Francisco has helped over 120 individuals with developmental disabilities transition to independent living in the community through housing placement assistance and ongoing Independent Living Skills training and support which includes all of the following:
- Assist and teach persons to create and maintain homes of their own.
This could involve learning how to do the laundry, grocery shop, pay bills, or how to prepare meals.
- Help persons to participate in their communities.
This may involve learning how to check out a book at the library, how to purchase a MUNI card, or join a fitness club.
- Provide meaningful weekend social and recreational choices.
We provide instruction and awareness of social and recreational opportunities, information on available transportation to events, assistance determining and accessing funds needed for activities, and companionship as needed.
- Teach and assist persons with their medical needs.
Learning how to make and keep doctor appointments, how to communicate with the doctor's offices, how to follow doctor's instructions, and how to obtain a prescription are just a few of the areas addressed.
- Assistance finding affordable housing options.
In-Home Support Services and Live-In Support Staff/Roommates
The severity of cognitive or physical disabilities does not rule out independent living for individuals who desire this lifestyle option. For individuals with physical or behavioral challenges, The Arc is able to assist clients with daily living tasks they are not able to perform on their own. These individuals often qualify for In-Home Support Services to augment the support and training our staff provide. It is even possible to provide service up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and/or arrange for a live-in roommate to provide some services.
