Using Your Community

The Arc of San Francisco offers an array of services to help adults with developmental disabilities participate in and enjoy the benefits of their community. We offer a variety of services such as Community Training, Integrated Work, Skills Development and Retention, Individualized Services, and Senior Services. The level of supervision varies among the different service models depending on the support needs and independence level of the individuals, but all our services are designed to help clients develop the skills needed to pursue their interests and enjoy a balanced life.

Clients learn how to resolve conflicts, establish and maintain friendships outside service hours, advocate for oneself in major life decisions and implementation of daily services, understand current events, participate in government, earn wages outside service hours, develop literacy, computer, and other academic skills, make healthy nutritional choices, access resources near one's home, and develop greater awareness and practice of healthy and safe lifestyles. Clients also receive support in the pursuit of a variety of interests such as volunteerism, exercise, education, and recreation/leisure. Many clients are enrolled in City College or other classes in the community with the support of our instructors. Clients of The Arc are currently volunteering at over 25 volunteer centers, and are participating in leisure activities such as Aikido and Modern Dance classes.

The Arc's Senior Services is based in our branch site near Fisherman's Wharf. We serve persons over the age of 45 in a recreation and leisure program. We attend community events, senior centers, and ceramic classes. Our clients volunteer at senior centers by serving meals. We emphasize health, exercise, and nutrition for our aging population.

In February 2004, The Arc launched ArtReach Studios in Pacifica, California, modeled after an arts college rather than a traditional art therapy program. ArtReach Studios delivers a traditional year-round course of study in visual, expressive, and media arts, which includes classes and workshops in reading and writing fiction, plays, and poetry; theatre and spoken word performance; dance, music theory and composition, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, textile arts, sculpture, graphic design, website design, film, and videography. Integrated classes take place in the community as well as utilizing studio space, and incorporate formal instruction, exploration, facilitated peer critique, and practice.
